In 1989 Matt got his first taste of acting after being spotted waiting for a bus in Wellington. The assistant director of locally made police TV drama, titled 'Shark in the Park' hired Matt to play a street kid in an episode titled "Cat among the pigeons." Even though the role was small and hade a screen time of only a few minutes ,Matt pleased the director with the way the character made the scene work when the script was almost calling for a re-write on the day. After that role Matt, inspired by the first job, searched out acting agent Gail Cowan of Wellington's elite Double Happy actors agency. (Anna Paquin fame)

Matt stayed with Gail and Double happy for eight years featuring in a number of television commercial's. Countywide Bank soon chose Matt as the lead in a National advertisment campaign.
